From
an aesthetic point of view a weapons form is not only exciting
to watch but also exhilarating to perform and provides additional
mental stimulation allowing one to break free from the sometimes
monotonous training regime.
Weaponry
provides the weight training for the various martial arts
aiding in the development one’s strength and stamina.
Training such as this supplements the empty hand aspect of
the martial arts since most movements used in the weapons
patterns are completely interchangeable with empty hand applications.
The
weapons are generally broken into the categories of long or
short range, bladed and non-bladed and flexible. The sledgehammer
would be an example of a short range non-bladed weapon while
the three sectional staff and the rope dart would be representative
of the flexible weapons category.
The
weapons practiced in Chinese kung fu are as varied as the
individuals who wield them. From the commonly seen staffs,
broadswords and spears to the more exotic hook swords, rope
dart, tiger fork, horse bench and monk’s spade to
name a few. There exists a weapon suitable to every body
type and personality. The heavy weapons are best suited
to the powerful stocky individuals and the light flexible
weapons are found in the hands of the lighter more agile
practitioners.
