Club Rules & Etiquette

To help you feel more comfortable we have outlined the following information regarding some rules and etiquitte .

                              Show of Respect
In all martial arts clubs a bow is used as a show of respect. There a various ways to bow. The type of bow will depend on the style of martial art you are practicing. We practice primarily traditional Chinese Martial Arts.

The Bow / Kung Fu Salute
The Simple Bow
Start with your feet together. Hands at your sides with palms facing inward. The right fist and left palm placed together in front of you. Bring your hands up and place them together as shown above.
Bend forward at the waist while pressing your hands forward slightly. Keep your eyes open and look up. This bow will be used upon entering or leaving the training area. It will also be used when bowing to fellow students and instructors. Bend deeper for Sifu (Grand Master Mark Chan Wah). Master Chan may visit any class at any time.  When he arrives we will momentarily cease what we are doing and show him respect with a bow.

Hung gar Bow
We also use a more formal bow which comes from the Hung Gar Lineage. (Not shown here.)

Symbolism of the Bow
Yin is soft and yang is hard. The left hand being open symbolizes yin and the right hand closed into a fist symbolizes yang. The hands coming together symbolizes the blending of the two. Covering the fist also shows that you do not wish to cause any harm.
